A few years ago, a man who is well known to me opened a Distillation Plant for Wines and Spirits in Githunguri Town, his business was doing very well until one day he invited the media to his premises. The following day, his story of 'Rags to Riches' was the talk of the entire township. Little did he know that he had exposed himself to KRA officials.
The rest as they say is history, when KRA calculated what he owed the Government in taxes, he literally attempted to commit suicide. He closed down and with honesty the local community was glad. His products and brands had become a problem, he was 'zombifying' the youths in the region. It was a story of one man becoming a millionaire at the expense of thousands of youths who were getting wasted by what would later be termed as illicit brews.
Fast forward we're talking about African Spirit and Keroche Brewers. From my little understanding, the Government has an inventory of the licensed sellers and importers of ethanol. What has emerged is that these two firms produce and sell more spirits than their declared purchases of ethanol, as a matter of fact the variance is humongous. When African Spririts learnt that DCI was investigating them, they burnt down one of their establishments to hide evidence. It didn't work, you cannot runaway from the Government.
DCI is reportedly investigating several politicians from Migori County including Governor Obado and a Jubilee legislator from the same region Hon. Mathias Robi Nyamabe, MP Kuria West who is believed to be at the centre of importation of illicit ethanol from Tanzania. Sources indicate that 90% of black market ethanol is transported into Kenya through a 'Private Road' on the MP's homestead which is at the border and later transported to Kisumu and Nairobi, this is solely to avoid customs at Isbania border.
My ten cent advice to Tabitha Kariuki is simple, paying bloggers so that they can help you to fight the Government in its assiduity to eradicate tax evasion won’t help you. These bloggers do not have an iota of the evidence against you, only the DCI and Noodin Haji, your Prosecutor, has. Courts listen to evidences adduced therein, not social media stories rants. Therefore, if you want to defeat Haji, meet him in Court, not on Facebook.
