A Nyeri Court has released a suspect in the murder of Joyce Syombua and her two children on the grounds that he was not directly involved in the murder.
The suspect, Peter Maina Mwangi, had been arrested after it was established that he was communicating with former Kenya Defense Officer Major Peter Mugure who is the prime suspect in the murder of Syombua and her two children, Shanice Maua and Prince Michael.
Mwangi, however, reached an agreement with the prosecution and offered to be a witness for the state leaving Peter Mugure and his co-accused Collins Pamba as the only suspects in the case.
The suspect is alleged to have information that will be useful to the prosecution.
He is reported to have shared the information while he was being held at Kiganjo Police Station Nyeri.
“The DPP has discovered the suspect was not directly linked with the crime but is assisting police with investigations. He is now a key prosecution witness,” State Counsel Martha Ndung’u argued.
Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Peter Mailanyi confirmed the reports.
“We are no longer detaining him but he will be reporting to the DCI Nanyuki,” he said.
The remaining suspects in the case are being held separately after a directive from the court.
