Joseph Irungu alias Jowie's transfer from Kamiti Maximum Prison in Nairobi to Manyani Maximum Prison in Voi has really affected him.
Jowie, who is a prime suspect in the murder of Kilimani businesswoman Monica Kimani, was transferred from Kamiti to Manyani on Friday in what the prison termed as a “routine exercise.”
Visiting him at Manyani in Voi on Tuesday, Jowie's father, Julius Irungu noted that his health was deteriorating. Jowie is reportedly said to have boycotted eating at his new location, due to fear he could be poisoned.
“My son is wondering why out of the 3, 000-plus inmates in Kamiti, he was the only one who was transferred to Manyani Maximum Prison in the so-called routine exercise,” his father said.
“I was meant to understand that since his transfer on Friday, Jowie was yet to eat. When I asked him why he had refused to have his meals, he told me that he had a gut-feeling his food was contaminated. He was in bad shape."
However, Jowie's lawyer, said that they are not aware of who gave orders for him to be transferred.
They have vowed to move to court to ask that he gets transferred back to Kamiti as soon as possible to allow for easy access by his families and his lawyer.
“My client’s criminal case is before a Nairobi court. Logistically, it is very hard for us — his legal team — to access him in a detention center that is 300 kilometers away from the capital city,” said Jowie's lawyer, David Ayuo.
